Configure nowAn architectural Palladian window, also known as a Venetian or Serlian window, is characterised by its three parts – a large central arch framed by two symmetrical rectangular elements either side. The windows also typically feature glazing bars, which add charm and a traditional touch.
The window type originates from the work or motif of 16th Century Italian architect Andrea Palladio, who designed similar forms for famous basilicas and other architecture. Outside of Italy, the form became particularly popular in the UK during the 17th and 18th centuries to mirror Italian architecture.
At windows24.com we offer made-to-measure rectangular and arched windows in a wide range of sizes that can be installed to create palladian forms.
To meet different customer needs, we offer a range of different opening options. If palladian windows are to be installed in interiors that already have a good source of ventilation or if customers are looking for maximum security, fixed panels can be supplied.
On the other hand, to allow for good air flow and versatile use, we also offer a tilt and turn option. An innovative German invention, this system has the sash swing fully in on side hinges or rather tilt ajar depending on what position the handle is turned to.
When it comes to the arched part of a Venetian window, a single sash with a tilt and turn system can be supplied or rather double sashes topped by an arched fanlight could also be used to construct a bigger dimension and allow for wider views out. These double sashes can be operated separately with tilt and turn, tilt-only, or turn-only options. The upper fanlight can also be tiltable for additional airing.
Because glass takes up a large proportion of a window’s surface area, its quality and design will also impact how the final product performs. Various types of glazing and combinations can therefore be selected:
Alongside choosing an insulating frame material like uPVC and a special profile, products can be made more energy-efficient if thicker glass is chosen. While double glazing, featuring two panes, provides sufficient insulation, for example, if triple glazing with an additional third pane is chosen, further savings on house utility bills can be made.
Beyond heat insulation, we then also offer acoustic glass that can block the travel of exterior sound waves into buildings by different degrees to create a peaceful interior.
To enhance safety and security, specially manufactured toughened or laminated glass can be chosen. Produced via rapid cooling and heating cycles or by adding PVB polymer foil interlayers, these glass types are stronger and harder to break. If they are broken though, under very high force, the panes won’t shatter into sharp shards; they will rather form safer blunt crumbs, or the pieces will remain held on intact foil beneath.
To shield interiors from passers-by, we offer various frosted glazing options. Alternatively, the glass can also be finished in an ornamental option like Cathedral Small, which adds character and texture. Beyond the finish, we then also offer various glazing bars that come in the same colour as the product’s frame. The bars' number and placement on the panel can be determined in our user-friendly configurator.
