What Is Laminated Glass?

Laminated safety glass is a specially designed protective and security glazing featuring PVB polymer foil interlayers between panes that are inserted during a lamination process.

PVB stands for polyvinyl butyral. It is a resin-like interlayer foil that absorbs impact and is also used in car windscreens. As the material is highly transparent, it is also invisible when looking through the glass, providing clear views out.

Laminated glass makes the window or door’s panel high in strength and increases its thickness, making it harder to break. If it does break though, under very high force, the panes then won’t shatter out in sharp shards; rather, they will form safer blunt crumbs that remain held on the intact foil layers beneath. This protects people inside from injuring themselves during a fall while also increasing break-in protection against intruders.

Options & Usage

At windows24.com, alongside toughened/tempered panels, we offer 8 mm laminated glass, also known as 442; the glass features 2 panes that are each 4 mm thick as well as 2 PVB interlayer foils. Both the inside and outside of the window or door’s glass panel can feature a laminated glass sheet, or rather it can be just used for the outer sheet or for the inner one only. The inner variant best protects and ensures the safety of people inside the building who could fall or slip into the panel, whereas the outer option provides enhanced break-in protection.

Opting for safety glass for new windows and doors should be an important consideration if the products will be installed in bathrooms or kitchens.

In the UK, for example, the Approved Document K regulation defines these rooms as “critical locations” where an increased risk of slipping means that people are more likely to be injured or to have an accident.

Laminated or toughened/tempered glazing must therefore be used in these locations to meet this standard and ensure the success of planning applications.

Customise the Glass to Suit Further Requirements

  • As well as being extra impact resistant, safety glass can be adapted further for enhanced function and design:

Improved Insulation thanks to Multiple Panes

To save on energy bills, reduce carbon footprint, and keep interiors at a stable temperature year-round, laminated glass can consist of three panes and therefore be a specific type of triple glazing. While our standard double glazing provides sufficient insulation, the triple variant has an increased thickness and therefore better reduces energy loss via conduction. Whichever you choose, both glass options additionally feature dense sealed argon gas and an external low-e coating, which further improve quality and thermal performance as excess UV-rays and infrared radiation are blocked and energy loss is slowed.

Create Peaceful Spaces with Soundproofing

To reduce noise entering homes, laminated glass, whether double or triple-glazed, can also feature various levels of soundproofing. Via the addition or an invisible “silence foil” layer, specific frequencies can be targeted, such as that of nearby trains, and the entry of noise through the glass will be reduced by the required number of decibels to create comfortable, quiet interior spaces.

Add Privacy and Complete the Look

  • Our high strength glass is transparent and provides excellently clear views out.
  • If you are looking to better shield interiors though, we also offer various glass finishes like frosted Chinchilla that can be selected in the configurator.
  • To add further style and character while also blurring the view in, we have further variants like the charming Cathedral Small glass finish.

Beyond finishes, glazing bars can also be selected. Available in three variants, Helima (inserted between panes), Viennese (externally applied to both the inner and outer panes), or sash (partitions the glass into true sections), the bars come matching the colour of the window or door's frame and material. The property also benefits from their traditional charm. The number of bars and their position on the glass can also be individually set in the configurator, which truly makes the product your own.
