Uw Values for the Composite Sliding Door

When purchasing a new composite sliding door, insulation and energy efficiency are some of the most important parameters. Uw values – also known as heat transfer coefficients – can help to find the perfect frame and glazing types. The transfer coefficient defines the loss of energy through solid materials, caused by heat differences. The smaller these Uw values are for a composite sliding door, the less energy that will be lost through the doorway.

The Uw value for composite sliding doors is calculated from the individual U values of the window frame and glazing, as well as the heat loss at the edges of the glazing. In order to ensure comparability, a standard window size of 1230 x 1480 mm is used. However, it can be assumed that the larger the surface of the composite sliding door the lower the Uw value will be.

A thermally separated edge compound at the insulated glazing - the so called "warm edge" - can further improve the insulation of the entire composite sliding door (Uw).

The Uw values of the composite sliding door can determine whether the door can be classified as suitable for passive houses and whether government subsidizing – such as with the German KfW – is possible. The resulting energy savings do not only serve to protect the environment, they also have a positive effect on your personal wallet.

With a surface of 30 m² on a composite sliding door, the difference between the Uw values of 3,5 and 0,83 can make an annual difference of about 1,000 litres of heating oil.
